NETHERLANDS Radio Netherlands has reached an agreement with the Pristina radio station 'in exile', Radio 21, to broadcast two hours a day in Albanian on shortwave from the RN transmitter site on the Flevoland polder. These transmissions have been arranged through the Amsterdam-based Press Now, a grouping of organizations which actively support the independent media in the Balkans. Broadcasts are scheduled at 1830-2025 UTC on 9495kHz, beamed to south eastern Europe. The service is intended for the hundreds of thousands of Kosovar refugees in the region who are in desparate need of information as they make plans for an eventual return home. The first transmission went out on Friday 12th June. Radio Netherlands is not responsible for the content of the Radio 21 programmes, which are prepared by Radio 21 journalists and sent to Radio Netherlands over a modem link. Radio 21 was on the air from Pristina for more than a year as a Web-only radio station, having been refused a broadcast licence by the Serbian authorities. On the night of March 23rd 1999, their premises were destroyed by the Serbs, and the staff of Radio 21 were among the first to flee the country. A limited service has resumed on the Web at www.radio21.net but this shortwave service means that Radio 21 can now reach many more people. (Media Network staff via E-mail).
